why does my lhasa apso have such bad breath?

I was going to say possibly a rotten tooth but since he’s so young then it’s unlikely…… get him vet checked if you’re worried about it….

The first thing to do would be take him to a vet. Bad breath is a symptom of a health problem. Dental, kidney just to name a couple. Breath treats do not cure problems, they hide the symptom. After he has been seen by a vet and IF they determine there is no underlying health problem you might want to look at what you are feeding him. Poor quality foods will give a dog bad breath. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. At 7 months…it is unlikely that the breath you are smelling is due to rotten teeth. He simply hasn’t had teeth long enough for them to be rotten enough to emit that kind of odor. Additionally, by 6 months he should have lost all of his baby teeth and gotten his adult teeth. So…unless there is a problem with his baby teeth (you can easy check that by looking in his mouth) then the problem probably lies in either his diet or a more serious illness.
If you are feeding him canned food, that could be the source. Crunchy kibble is so much healthier for dogs than the moist mushy canned stuff. That stuff sticks to their teeth and festers. (But you say you are brushing his teeth…so the odor is probably not from his mouth.
If you aren’t feeding him a premium dog food, then I would bet my paycheck that is the culprit. Low and mid grade dog foods have fillers and lots of corn meal in them. Dogs are not made to eat corn (just ask them). If not already switch to a better food. I use Nutro (from Petsmart) and my dogs don’t have any issues with doggie breath at all. There are other good brands…you don’t have to spend a fortune…but it is definitely worth spending a little extra.
If different food doesn’t help…then you are left with a trip to the vet.

if his teeth are in bad shape , decaying teeth can cause bad breath.

I have a dog that is 1/2 lhasa apso, 1/2 shih tzu. He’s 13 years old now but has had horrible bad breath for as long as I can remember. I’ve tried breath treats, got his teeth cleaned, and he’s even just recently had a blood test done on his kidneys, etc. None of this has helped his breath. He did have bad teeth and they were removed. So I don’t have advice for helping the breath, but I just wanted to let you know it doesn’t necessarily have to be a health problem. I figure my dog has halitosis (sp?).
